The new model has already entered serial production and will go on sale in 2019. Its starting price is 16,000 euros.
German startup Sono Motors is launching mass production of the world’s first family car with solar panels, UNIAN reports.
Development of the Sion electric car began in Munich back in 2016. The company is now ready for serial production of the solar-powered hybrid.
330 solar cells are mounted on the car’s surface. To protect them from dust, dirt, and water, they are coated with a thin layer of polycarbonate. The solar panel can provide a range of 30 km without recharging. It takes eight hours to recharge, but the driver is not tied to a power outlet.
The car also features a battery with a range of 250 km and charges to 80% in 40 minutes. The Sion features an innovative moss-based filter that maintains optimal humidity levels in the cabin and filters out up to 20% of fine particles.
