Why solar panel power is not the most important parameter

When choosing solar panels, most buyers first look at the module power rating. 450 W, 580 W, 620 W or even 700 W are often perceived as the main indicators of equipment performance. In reality, however, solar panel power alone does not always determine the actual energy generation of a solar power system.

In modern solar projects, technology, temperature behavior, degradation, cell efficiency and long-term stability under real operating conditions play a major role. This is why two solar panels with the same nominal power can deliver different performance results over many years of operation.

What Solar Panel Power Actually Means

The power rating specified in solar panel specifications is measured under STC (Standard Test Conditions). These laboratory conditions include:

  • cell temperature of 25°C;
  • solar irradiance of 1000 W/m²;
  • AM1.5 solar spectrum.

Under these conditions, manufacturers determine the nominal output power of the module, such as 580 W or 620 W.

However, solar panels in real operating conditions almost never work under STC. During summer, rooftop module temperatures can exceed 60–70°C, while sunlight angle, ventilation and weather conditions constantly change.

That is why it is important to evaluate not only STC values, but also NOCT (Nominal Operating Cell Temperature) specifications, which are much closer to real solar power plant operating conditions.

Why Two Panels With the Same Power Can Perform Differently

Solar panels with the same nominal wattage may show different real-world efficiency levels. Performance depends on:

  • temperature coefficient;
  • module degradation;
  • cell quality;
  • manufacturing technology;
  • stability of characteristics;
  • partial shading behavior;
  • assembly quality and production control.

The difference becomes especially important in commercial and industrial solar projects, where even a small percentage loss in generation can significantly affect project economics.

Temperature Coefficient: A Parameter Often Ignored

One of the most important solar panel specifications is the temperature coefficient of power. It shows how much generation decreases as the module heats up.

The lower the losses at high temperatures, the more stable the panel operates during hot weather conditions.

This is one reason why modern TOPCon modules are increasingly used in commercial solar projects. Compared to traditional PERC solutions, TOPCon panels generally maintain better performance at high temperatures and provide more stable long-term generation.

Degradation Affects Solar Generation for Years

Another important factor is solar panel degradation. Any photovoltaic module gradually loses part of its output during operation. However, degradation rates can differ significantly depending on the technology and manufacturer.

Modern Tier 1 manufacturers are generally associated with:

  • lower degradation rates;
  • more stable performance;
  • higher production standards;
  • predictable long-term generation.

For this reason, solar panel selection should consider not only initial power output, but also long-term operating performance over 10–15 years.

Why Technology Matters More Than Wattage Today

In 2026, the solar industry continues transitioning toward advanced photovoltaic technologies:

  • TOPCon;
  • BC (Back Contact);
  • modern bifacial solutions.

These panels typically offer:

  • higher efficiency;
  • better high-temperature performance;
  • lower degradation;
  • more stable real-world generation.

As a result, a panel with slightly lower nominal wattage but more advanced technology can sometimes outperform a cheaper higher-wattage module over the long term.

For residential, commercial and industrial solar energy systems, it is important to evaluate multiple factors:

  • project type;
  • available installation area;
  • temperature conditions;
  • expected generation;
  • degradation rate;
  • inverter compatibility;
  • future scalability;
  • manufacturer warranty;
  • technical support availability.

For business and commercial solar projects, stable supply chains, predictable performance and manufacturer reliability are especially important.
