Energy storage system – energy independence for your home

We live in times when the transition to autonomous energy supply is becoming a necessity. Due to rising electricity tariffs and the instability of power grids due to constant shelling, the energy problem is taking on new dimensions.

Home energy storage systems are becoming one of the best solutions in this context. They can significantly reduce energy bills and provide reliable power even in the event of emergency outages.

What are home energy storage systems?

An energy storage system uses batteries to store excess electricity that can be used later, such as at night or during power outages. The system usually consists of an inverter that controls the energy sources (solar panels, generator, or grid) and batteries that store the energy.

The most common way to charge such systems is with solar panels, because solar energy is free and inexhaustible. Charging from the grid or a generator is also possible. Energy storage systems for homes and flats provide not only savings, but also stability in cases of blackouts.

The financial benefits of energy storage systems:

  1. Optimisation of time of use of electricity (TOU): The country has now implemented tariffs that depend on the time of day. During peak hours, such as morning or evening, electricity tariffs are much higher. By using energy storage system, batteries can be charged at night during lower tariffs and electricity can be utilised during peak hours.
  2. Peak Shaving: During peak hours, the batteries can provide power to the house, significantly reducing energy costs. Charging from the grid or solar panels during ‘low-cost’ hours can significantly reduce the load on the grid.
  3. Reduced reliance on the grid: With frequent power outages due to shelling, reliance on the grid can be significantly reduced. Solar energy stored during the day can provide power when the grid is unavailable.
  4. Maximise solar energy: Solar panels often produce more energy than can be used during the day. If it is not sold to the grid, it is simply lost. Batteries allow this energy to be stored for later use at night, maximising the profitability of the solar system.

How to choose the right energy storage system:

  1. Electricity consumption: It is important to consider the amount of consumption. Even in a small house or flat, costs can be high if powerful appliances are used.
  2. Budget: Energy storage systems are innovative technologies and the initial investment can be quite significant. However, with tariffs continually rising, and electricity costs falling, the investment pays off in the long run.
  3. Integration with existing solar systems: Most energy storage systems can work with solar panels already installed. However, compatibility should be checked before purchase.
  4. Government support programmes and subsidies: There are support programmes in Ukraine for those investing in renewable energy, which can significantly reduce the cost of installing an energy storage system.

An energy storage system for the home helps to increase the efficiency of solar energy utilisation and reduce energy costs. The sooner you install such a system, the sooner you can optimise your energy consumption and ensure energy independence.
